Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if a beam starts cracking?
Depending upon the cracks, the situation can be assessed. If the cracks are very fine then it might not be a problem as RCC will crack to transfer the load to steel reinforcement and this is normal behavior of RCC. There might also be shrinkage cracks which are structurally not critical. They can be treated by preparing the cracks and injecting epoxy into the cracks. Read More
What is the maximum allowable building length without the use of expansion joints for steel & R.C. buildings?
It basically depends on the temperature variation to which the structure is subjected throughout the year as well as layout of the building. However as a thumb rule for RCC buildings it should not be more than 200 ft.
For steel structure it can be up to 400 ft, however in this case the expansion joint will have to be designed to take much larger relative movement which might not be feasible, hence its spacing is limited by the allowable movement which is practically feasible for the expansion joint. Read More
Can we use “hidden beams” in a flat slab or not?
Flat slabs do, in fact, have concealed beams inside them. Flat slabs are divided into middle strips and column strips. Column strips are sort of concealed beams with significantly more reinforcement than middle strip. Read More
